A record number of 78 boats will take part in the 65th Nehru trophy boat race to be held at Punnamada Lake here on Saturday. All arrangements have been completed for the race, according to officials.
Of the 78 boats, 24 are snakeboats, each with a carrying capacity of about 100 rowers.
Twenty snakeboats will take part in the race in five heats and four in an exhibition race. The races will be held in the afternoon. It will be officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at 2 p.m.
The boats that clock minimum time in the heats will take part in the final and losers’ final. The heats of smaller boats will commence at 11 a.m. with five Iruttukuthi A Grade boats, 25 Iruttukuthi B Grade boats, nine Veppu A Grade boats, six Veppu B Grade boats, and three Churulan boats. Women will participate in the Thara and Kettuvallom categories.
A foolproof mechanised starting system has been put in place by the infrastructure committee of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society which organises the race. The new system has been introduced as disputes over starting had marred the smooth conduct of the event on several occasions in the past. A digital display system has been set up to ensure accuracy in the timings.
The race will be telecast live by Doordarshan.
There will be a webcast on http:// webcast.gov. in/ nehrutrophy.
The entry to the pavilion at the entry point will be limited to ticket/pass holders. Barricades have been erected to prevent unauthorised entry to the area.
Special boat services will be available to transport spectators from the Nehru pavilion after the race. The organisers have asked the people to avoid rush.
The authorities have banned plying of boats and speed boats other than the official ones on the tracks after 8 a.m.
The boats that violate the rule will be seized.
