JORDAN Spieth has made light of challenging conditions to capture the clubhouse lead alongside US Open champion Brooks Koepka with first rounds of 65 at the British Open.
A fortnight after confirming he will return to Sydney in November to defend his Australian Open crown, Spieth collected six birdies in an ominous five-under-par start at windy Royal Birkdale.
Koepka later joined him in the clubhouse at 5 under after another excellent round.
The pair led by two strokes from inspired Englishman Ian Poulter, who was also safely in the clubhouse after carding an impressive 67 in even tougher going in the morning.
Spieth lived up to his pre-Open favouritism in style. He turned in 31 with birdies on two, eight and nine, then saved par on 10 with a brilliant flop shot from the rough on 10 to maintain momentum.
The world No.3 picked up another shot on the par-5 15th, then another on 17 before missing a great chance on the last to shoot a record-equalling 64. Spieth’s sublime round came on a day in which the field was averaging little more than 50 per cent of greens hit on a demanding layout not known for low scoring.

Koepka began his charge with four successive birdies from the ninth before atoning for a dropped shot on 16 with a hole-out eagle from the sand on the par-5 17th.
Poulter earlier wound back the clock to lead until being upstaged by Spieth and Koepka.
Runner-up the last time the Open was played on the Southport links in 2008, Poulter returned with fond memories to post four birdies and just one bogey.
Bidding to break England’s 25-year Open title drought, Poulter missed the 2016 Open through injury and only made the field this week through the final round of qualifying.
Sporting a tie and cardigan in a throwback to the days of Bobby Locke, fellow American US PGA star Justin Thomas also made his move with an eagle on 17 to join Poulter at three-under.
Little-known Welshman Stuart Manley made a spectacular eagle-birdie finish to his round to be three off the pace along with Swede Alex Noren at two under. Australian Aaron Baddeley made a promising start with two birdies in his first five holes to also be just three back, while Adam Scott was one-under through five and Jason Day even after six.
Wind and rain caused havoc for the early starters, but no one made a worse start than veteran Mark O’Meara.
Triumphant at Birkdale in 1998, O’Meara hit the very first tee shot of this year’s Open out of bounds en route to a first-hole quadruple-bogey eight. Five hours, six bogeys and a double later, the American signed for a horror 11-over 81.
