John Cena was victorious in his Flag Match against Ruev at WWE Battleground 2017, and as Cena looks ahead to SummerSlam, it'll be interesting to see how WWE books its free agent come August.
Top Raw Superstars Brock Lesnar,John Cena Rusev WWE Battleground  Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman are all locked in a Fatal 4-Way, which pretty much eliminates any chance of Cena's SummerSlam opponent being from the Raw roster.
Cena has been just fine on SmackDown Live, where viewership has increased in each of his three weeks back on the roster. The 2.548 million viewers for the Battleground go-home show represented the most viewers since June 27.
And despite slow ticket sales for WWE Battleground, WWE will have no problem selling out the Barclays Center, its second home, for one of its biggest pay-per-views of the year, with tickets selling for as high as $12,878.
Picking a John Cena opponent, especially for an .event of this nature, seems more important as the 40-year-old Cena moves closer to a full-time career in Hollywood. WWE can no longer take this process for granted, and given Cena's ability to skew babyface or heel, and there is a wide range of talent who can benefit from an elusive match against the all-time great at SummerSlam.
